Welcome to the Law Society!

As your President for 2019, my role is to enhance the student experience of all University of Wollongong Law students across both the Wollongong and South Western Sydney Campuses and add value to your degree.

My role is to facilitate and oversee the events, competitions and extra-curricular activities that will be a most important part of your time at Law School. In addition, I am responsible
for the leadership and overall administration of the Society. Day to day this involves overseeing the activities of all eight portfolios, liaising with you – our members, sponsors, community partners and the University and representing the interests of UOW Law Students on a broader stage.

This year the Society will focus on being Inclusive, Future-Focused and Fearless and it is these objectives that will guide my leadership.
I am in the final year of my Bachelor of Laws (Direct Entry) (Honours) degree and am excited by the prospect of not only finishing, but also of working with you all in 2019.

My name is Emerson, a fourth year Bachelor of Law/Commerce student. I grew up in Wollongong and currently work part time at a Law firm in Sydney. As Vice President of Administration, I am responsible for organising all Committee meetings and ensuring the Constitution is followed. I also work in close association with the President and all other portfolios organise key initiatives for the benefit of the society. I am an individual that values the legal profession, the values it strives to uphold and the individuals who represent these values. If you every have any concerns or queries about studying law or the Law Student Society, I am more than happy to chat to you.

My name is Olivia Poate and I’m your Vice President of Finance for UOWLSS. I am a third- year student studying a Bachelor of Law/Commerce (Finance). My role as the Vice President of Finance is to ensure that the UOWLSS’ financial affairs are conducted in an efficient, correct and transparent manner. As such this role will require me to work closely with the broader UOWLSS team to ensure that all financial affairs of the club are in order at all times. I’m looking forward to a great year.

Hi! I’m Bethany McGhie and I’m the 2019 UOWLSS VP for Careers. I’m a final year Bachelor of Laws student who is passionate about opening career opportunities for our students. My role this year is to help organise and set up various career opportunities alongside my Careers officers. I’ll be coordinating the careers fair, which I’m hoping will be the biggest one yet. I’ll also be organising the clerkship guide and clerkship resume writing workshop, as well as visits to law firms and public law industries. I can’t wait to showcase to employers the amazing talent we have here at UOW throughout 2019!

My name is Monica Naumovski and I am your VP (Marketing and Publications) for 2019 in the UOWLSS. I am about to enter my final year of my Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of International Studies degrees. I recently finished my internship at THE ICONIC and have built upon key legal marketing skills. In my spare time I do aerial acrobatics (I know risky for a want to be lawyer) and volunteer at the Aboriginal Legal Service, to build on my legal skills and maintain access to justice for Indigenous Australians. My role as VP (Marketing and Publications) is to communicate UOWLSS and UOW School of Law organised social and academic events. I will promote the importance of wellbeing and ensure that all material is communicated to you in the most efficient and entertaining way as possible. I will be governing all of your socials and bringing the UOWLSS to you through funky designed marketing and merchandise to promote a greater UOWLSS brand. I hope you enjoy all the marketing, publications and branding the UOWLSS has to offer this year. We can’t wait to bring our new ideas directly to you.

As Vice President (Education) I respond to issues relating to your education. I will aim to enhance students academic and university lives whilst promoting positive wellbeing and mental health. Together with my social justice, access and equity officers, we will strive to ensure your experience at UOW is positive and fulfilling.

My name is Rachael Smith and I’m the Vice President (Events) of the UOWLSS for the 2019 Term. This is my second year as an Executive on the UOWLSS and I’m entering my final year of a Bachelor of Laws – Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting).

 

My role is to organise the UOWLSS Events to make Law School not just lectures and readings, but the best years of your life! The events for 2019 are as follows: Cocktail Party, Harbour Cruise, First Year Survival Party, Trivia Night, Intervarsity Sports Day and LAW BALL. Each of these events give you an opportunity to spend time with your peers and celebrate all that is good about a life in Law. I hope you can all attend these events and wish you all the best with your studies in the year ahead!

I’m Samantha! I’m in my third year of Bachelor of Law/Arts and I am your Vice-President of External Competitions. I moved from my small town home to attend UOW, but Wollongong is a very welcoming place and the Law Student Society is here to make everything easier and more fun for you. I have worked in politics previously and I am also involved in other clubs and societies on campus, so you will see me around.

 

My role as VP Comps is to organise and facilitate students competing in external competitions such as the Intervarsity Criminal Law Moot which is a state-wide mooting competition. This year the competitions will be more accessible with masterclasses and coaching to help everyone get involved. My competitive streak has led me to this role and I want to make sure UOW students are recognised for their skills on an interstate level. Feel free to come and chat with me about any questions regarding external competitions – employers love to see students competitively developing their skills and engaging with extra-curricular activities.

My name is Emily O’Loughlin and I am the Vice-President (Internal Competitions) for 2019. My role centres around organising the variety of internal competitions that the LSS hold for our students, and includes introducing a new Criminal Advocacy comp. The competitions are focused on simulating different skills and challenges within the legal professional, and provide the opportunity to progress to national competitions. I’m Jackson Cocks and I am the IT and Publications Officer for the LSS in 2019. I am currently completing my second year of a double degree in Engineering (Honours) and Laws. In my spare time I referee both football (soccer) and basketball as well as work a few online marketing based jobs. As the IT and Publications officer I manage and keep the website up to date while also work with the VP of marketing to produce publications for the LSS. I’m just here to help make information from the UOWLSS as accessible as possible for 2019.

My name is Jamie and I am the Access Officer for 2019. I am responsible for ensuring that all UOWLSS members have an enriched academic and university life. As your Access Officer, I am here to help you and make sure that your university needs are met. In 2019 I aim to raise awareness within the LSS about the mental health issues that law students often face and help combat these with a range of strategies, including a focus on proper exercise and nutrition (especially for our LSS members that are living on their own for the first time!).

Hey! my name is Charles and I am one of your competitions officer for the law society this year. I’m currently doing a bachelor of law and international studies. Born in France, my dual citizenship makes me relatable to any international law student here at UOW. The past 2 years have been amazing for me at UOW and I want to give back to you all and work with the law society to make the degree a better experience for everyone. My name is Madeleine Joseph and I am your Public Careers Officer for UOWLSS. I am a third-year student studying Bachelor of Laws/International Studies.
